Making an Impact

Leave the world better than you found it.

Simple.

As an individual, a professional, and community member I feel it’s important to do my part when it comes to having a positive impact—whether through volunteering, raising awareness, or contributions.

Here’s how I try to do that.

I’m a proud business member of 1% for the Planet, where along with other businesses large and small, I’ve pledged 1% of my annual revenue to environmental causes.

This means whenever anyone works with me, 1% goes towards protecting and preserving our planet.

I’m also an investing member of Voiceover for the Planet, a group of like-minded performers and professionals who have pledged at least 1% of their revenue to environmental causes. In just our second year, we’ve collectively donated over $86k.

Reading For Good

When I have the opportunity, I perform an audiobook for a cause I’m passionate about and support.

So far we’ve raised money and awareness for The Trevor Project, World Central Kitchen, the people of Ukraine, as well as several other organizations.

One of the first things I did after forming Jay Myers Voiceover was become a 1% for the Planet business. In the face of the climate crisis, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and helpless, particularly as a single individual in the face of huge companies. Joining a collective like this helps me to actively lend resources in a way where they tangibly make an impact.

Many of my friends and family have been lucky enough to grow and develop with unconditional support from their homes and communities. That love and support should be available to everyone, everywhere. The Trevor Project helps to make that a reality.

Like many performers, I’ve worked for many years in restaurants including some of the most revered in the world in NYC. I loved it. So much so that in another life I would’ve owned a restaurant. The act of providing someone a meal is among the purest forms and expressions of love, and World Central Kitchen provides that comfort and love to the people in the world who need it most in the moments when they need it most.

One of my favorite places on the planet–Prospect Park. A green enclave in the heart of Brooklyn where in a short 30-minute walk you can find yourself alone with nothing but trees and sky, hear three or four different languages, see a hawk, a swan, a baby turtle, and (of course) several pups. The Prospect Park Alliance helps ensure that magic and this place are preserved and protected for everyone, indefinitely.

Libraries are sacred spaces. Equitable spaces. Essential spaces. Helping to ensure they not only survive but thrive in order to offer their services, opportunities, and ideas to our communities indefinitely is, to dramatically understate, important.
